A group of investors that met as the farmers' association estates of san fernando, acquired the southern half of rancho ex-mission san fernando. In 1873, isaac lankershim's son and soon-to-be son-in-law, james boon lankershim and isaac newton van nuys, moved to the san fernando valley and took over the management of the property. Van nuys thought that you could now successfully grow wheat on this site using dryland farming techniques developed on the great plains, and he leased land from the association to test his theories. In the course of time the lankershim estate, under its third name, los angeles farming and milling company, would become the largest wheat-growing empire in the world.[2-3]
In october 1887 j. B lankershim and eight other developers organized the lankershim ranch land and water company, purchasing 12,000 acres (49 km2) north of the kahuenga pass from the lankershim farming and milling company. Lankershim founded a town, which the inhabitants called toluca, along the old road from the cahuenga pass to san fernando. On april 1, 1888, they put ready small farms for delivery, already planted with deep-rooted deciduous fruit trees and walnut trees - usually peaches, pears, apricots and walnuts - capable of surviving the rainless summer of the valley, based on the newest level of water-bearing layers along the tujunga river, but not surface irrigation. In the 1890s, flower and nut farmers remained solvent. The toluca fruit growers association was formed in 1894. In the upcoming planting season, the south pacific opened a branch running northwest across the valley to chatsworth. Chatsworth limited made one freight stop immediately after in toluca, although the depot was renamed lankershim. Because the post office across the street was called toluca, conflicts over the city's name continued, with local ranchers quipping, "send groceries to lankershim, but bill toluca." In 1896, under pressure from lankershim, the post office in toluca was renamed "lankershim" in honor of his father, although the town's new name was not officially recognized until 1905.
By 1903, our area became known as the “peach house”. In 1912, the area's main employer, the bonner fruit company, was canning over several million tons of peaches, apricots, and similar fruits. Commission for los angeles county transportation authority approved the construction of a subway to connect north hollywood to hollywood, east hollywood, koreatown, westlake and downtown los angeles along the metro red line in 1990.
